December 2013 How to Resolve Conflicts

The Olympia Fellowship of Reconciliation’s December 2013 TV program focuses on a methodology for helping people resolve conflicts.  We also feature a local non-profit organization that uses those methods to help people do that. Across the country and here in Thurston County, Washington, nonprofit organizations (and a few local governments) are bringing people together with support from skilled neutral facilitators, to help people resolve a wide variety of conflicts and disputes in mutually respectful ways.  They achieve high rates of success.

November 2013 TTP A “Freed Trade Scam Much Worse Than NAFTA”http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZVTDepxVz2w&feature=youtu.be For decades now, presidents and Congresses of both big political parties have been pushing for "free trade" schemes that promise jobs and prosperity, but have produced the opposite. Our guest is Kristen Beifus, Executive Director of the Washington Fair Trade Coalition, which is based in Seattle. Kristen and her organization -- and many other people and organizations -- are working hard to protect our jobs, our environment, and our democracy from giant corporations that would use a dangerous new "free trade" scheme to gain power and money at the expense of the broad public interest.

October 2013 Dangers of Genetically Modified Food http://youtu.be/KXoPcB20i5s In recent years more and more people have become concerned that giant corporations are doing things to the food we eat that are bad for our human health, bad for agricultural animals, and bad for the environment.  A few giant corporations are tampering with the genetic makeup of food crops such as corn and soy.  They are splicing into these food crops some genes from totally different species to kill weeds or insects, or to make the plants grow faster. The changed crops are referred to as “genetically modified” (GM) or “genetically engineered” (GE). Our TV interview begins by debunking the common assumption that any food that the government allows to be sold must be safe.  Actually, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) does not routinely determine whether food is safe.  We are largely at the mercy of whatever the food corporations say.

September 2013 Iran: Understanding the Realities Achieving Peace http://youtu.be/Z6wHv54rrR4 Iran is often in the news, but much of what the US’s news media and politicians say grossly inaccurate. Much of it is mean-spirited and downright harmful. The Olympia Fellowship of Reconciliation’s September 2013 TV program: Reviews Iran’s history; provides for context for understanding what is really happening now; corrects some of the misinformation we’ve been hearing for many years; suggests more constructive ways to promote peace with Iran.

August 2013 Peace from Local to Global http://youtu.be/WGLrbgB3wEg  A national level’s Fellowship of Reconciliation’s Statement of Purpose explicitly recognizes “the essential unity of all creation” and commits ourselves to exploring “the power of love and truth for resolving human conflict.” Glen affirmed that these values have been powerful guides for his efforts since discovering that message in 1972. During this hour we discussed the current state of our neighborhoods, our nation, and our world. We recognized problems rooted in fear, stereotyping and labeling. We recognized problems rooted in greed for money and power. We also played with solutions open-mindedly and creatively.
We proposed a variety of solutions that are positive and humane.

July 2013 Social and Economic Justice Can Help Ease the Climate Crisis http://youtu.be/srpXRcAdk24 The science is settled. The climate crisis is real. And human behavior –especially burning fossil fuels –has caused it. The Olympia Fellowship of Reconciliation’s July 2013 TV program goes past the obvious causes to examine some causes that are not usually recognized. And these unrecognized sources of the problem are also unrecognized solutions! Our guest, Gar Lipow, is a researcher and writer with wide-ranging knowledge across very diverse subject matter. He is highly skilled at “connecting the dots” across issues to identify problems and propose solutions. He has written several books, including Solving the Climate Crisis Through Social Change and Cooling a Fevered Planet.

June 2013 Solving Homelessness Problems In New Ways: A Systems Approach http://youtu.be/47rxXB39uzk The greater Olympia and Thurston County areas have recently been addressing the homelessness problems in more thoughtful and comprehensive ways.  On the Olympia Fellowship of Reconciliation’s June 2013 TV program, three guests dispel the misunderstandings that have impaired public discussions.  Our guests also lay out some of the positive new directions for helping homeless people more effectively. Thurston County is using a new “systems approach” to relieve the confusion of a multiplicity of agencies and programs.  This approach focuses a few agencies to perform certain roles, and it allows for one point of entry for single adults (SideWalk), one entry point for families (Family Support Center), and one entry point for youths (Community Youth Services).  The entry agency can efficiently connect each individual with relevant resources and services.

May 2013 Creating a Sustainable Local Food System http://youtu.be/flUHMRLrv0Q Our nation’s existing food system relies heavily on an industrial model with heavy use of chemicals derived from oil and natural gas.  It relies upon genetically modified (GM) crops and includes other aspects that are not compatible with healthy food or healthy environment.  For thousands of years people grew food locally, so they could make relevant decisions about their food.  Now the decisions are made by giant corporations without our participation, and the food is grown distantly and transported over long distances.

April 2013:  Consequences of Denying Hard Realities http://youtu.be/lIj_S3Sb2KM Human beings have psychological defense mechanisms that make it hard for us to accept hard realities.  In fact, Al Gore titled his movie about the climate crisis “An Inconvenient Truth.”  The climate crisis is only one of the hard realities that many people deny rather than grapple with honestly. An economy that allows giant corporations to ship good jobs overseas and creates only a few low-wage jobs, so a whole generation of young Americans see no future for themselves.

March 2013 Nuclear Weapons Threaten Life and Waste Money http://youtu.be/YlxIfRWIjLg The Cold War ended more than 20 years ago, and the Soviet Union no longer exists.  But the U.S. is still fighting this obsolete Cold War with very dangerous and very expensive nuclear weapons.  We especially focus on the Trident nuclear submarines based at the Navy base at Bangor in Kitsap County, just 60 miles north of Olympia and 20 miles west of Seattle.  Tridents are always on hair-trigger alert and poised for a suicidal first strike against Russia or some other target.  If used, the Trident submarine could destroy the world.

February 2013 ITTP Cracks the Cycle of Trauma in World Conflicts http://youtu.be/RNEAnLkKUTs The Olympia Fellowship of Reconciliation’s February 2013 TV program explores the extent and dynamics of wars and other violent conflicts that cause trauma, how traumatized people suffer, and what they need for recovery these concerns.  The Olympia-based International Trauma Treatment Program (ITTP) approaches this work with special insights and sensitivities, so it has worked more effectively than many typical organizations and agencies.  Our two guests, Dr. John Van Eenwyk and Ayman Nijim have worked extensively in this field.

January 2013 Local Government Fairness and Accountability http://youtu.be/nyqyAzZ_J6M The Olympia Fellowship of Reconciliation’s January 2013 TV program helps us understand some basic principles related to local government decision-making so the viewers will be better able to protect the broad public interest.  We also discuss a few local case studies, such as the proposed Olympia conference center that an aroused public stopped, and Olympia’s Isthmus, which the public wants to turn into a public park.
